The residents of Egtved in Denmark have invested in a greener and cheaper heat source – a sustainable energy plant combined with a straw burning biomass boiler, heat pump and solar heating system – for the sake of the future! The new plant replaces an old combined heat and power plant powered by natural gas. Prompted by supply and escalating gas prices.
In this time of turmoil in the energy market, interest in alternative energy sources has grown. No one knows when the sky-high prices of natural gas and electricity will normalise again, and therefore, there are many benefits to investing in a combination plant.
By combining a straw burning biomass boiler and an electric heat pump that absorbs energy from the air outside, a high degree of flexibility is ensured as it is possible to fire with Straw biomass when the price of electricity is high while using the heat pump when the electricity price is low. When biomass and a heat pump are combined, the temperature of district heating water can be higher than would be possible with a heat pump alone.
“It was precisely flexibility and security of supply that made us choose this particular Linka plant.” Leif O. Rasmussen, Operations Manager, Egtved Heating Plant In Egtved, CO2 emissions will be reduced by approx. 14,000 tonnes per year with the new plant. District heating will also be even cheaper in the town!
Sustainable renewable energy with biofuels based on the latest incineration technology The plant is designed to be able to use several different types of biomass. Primarily, locally produced straw and wood chips can be used, but other fuels such as maise silage and biomass-based products can also be used in the plant. There is a strong focus on biomass coming from local producers, and at the same time, it is also possible to scale the work up and down in size as needed.
“It was important for us to have a future-proof heating plant with the highest possible environmental profile.” Anders Rønshof, Chairman of Egtved Heating Plant
